What I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Certified Coach:
1. You don’t need to have it all figured out.
When I first started coaching, I thought I needed to have every part of my life “together” before I could support others. The truth is, some of the best coaches are still growing, healing, and evolving. Your humanity makes you relatable, not unqualified.
What you do need is a willingness to listen, learn, and hold space without judgment. You are not expected to have all the answers. You’re expected to hold space so your client can find theirs.
2. Certification matters, and not just for the credential.
Becoming a certified coach gives you more than a title. A great certification program will:
- Equip you with tools and frameworks
- Teach you how to have real, impactful coaching conversations
- Build your confidence
- Give you credibility when working with clients or organizations
But more importantly, it helps you develop your coaching identity and presence. It’s a structured, supported space to practice, refine, and grow before launching into the real world of coaching.
When you choose a program that’s right for your goals, you set yourself up not just to certify, but to thrive.
3. Coaching isn’t about giving advice.
One of the biggest mindset shifts new coaches need to make is learning how to coach, not consult or mentor. Coaching is about asking powerful questions, helping clients uncover their own answers, and trusting the process.
It’s about listening deeply, reflecting what you hear, and holding a space where change can happen.
Learning how to stay curious rather than offer solutions is a skill that grows with time and practice. And it’s a lot more freeing than you might expect. It means you don’t need to know everything in order to help someone make powerful changes.
4. You’re building a business, not just a practice.
Many new coaches focus only on their skills. But learning how to market your services, talk about your offer, and bring in consistent clients is part of the journey too.
You don’t need to know everything from day one. You will need support along the way. Coaching is a profession and a business. Knowing how to talk about what you do is just as important as doing it well.
Investing in programs that blend business foundations with skill-building is one of the best decisions you can make early on.
5. You are more ready than you think.
There will never be a perfect time. But if coaching has been calling to you, that’s something to pay attention to. The desire to help others, grow personally, and create a new kind of career doesn’t show up by accident.
If you’re feeling excited and scared at the same time, that’s normal. If you’re wondering if you have what it takes, the fact that you care so much is a good sign you do.
Your unique story, experiences, and perspective are needed in this space.
